Domain name vs. website vs. hosting: what's the difference?

If you're setting up your first website, three terms get used interchangeably that actually mean different things: domain name, website and hosting. Knowing what each one does makes it much easier to buy the right things and troubleshoot problems later.

Domain name

Your domain name is the address people type into a browser to find you, like yourbusiness.com.au. You register it through a domain registrar (Mind Byte is one) for a yearly fee, and as long as it's renewed, it's yours to use. A domain doesn't contain any files or content on its own. It just points to wherever your website actually lives.

Website

Your website is the actual content: the pages, images, text and design that visitors see and interact with. It's built using a content management system (like WordPress) or custom code, and it needs somewhere to be stored so it's accessible on the internet at all times.

Hosting

Hosting is that storage. It's a server, or a share of one, that holds your website's files and serves them up whenever someone visits your domain. Without hosting, your website has nowhere to live, and without a domain pointing at it, nobody can find it by name.

How they fit together

Think of it like a shop. The domain name is the street address on the sign out front. The website is the shop itself, the shelves, products and layout inside. Hosting is the building the shop sits in. You need all three for customers to find you, walk in, and see what you're selling.
